How to Make a Tree Stump Costume
Children need costumes for many reasons. Plays, costume parties and Halloween all require costumes, sometimes with the request for an original or themed costume. Trees and tree stumps are common costumes in plays for small children and can be recycled for Halloween costumes. Children's costumes, however, are rather expensive, and it is difficult to find a tree costume or even a tree stump costume.
Making a homemade costume is the simplest solution to these problems. You need few materials and almost no sewing talent. Just be creative and have fun.

1
Wrap the foam around your child and make a mark where it overlaps. Cut the foam at your mark in a straight line.
-
2
Wrap the foam around your child again, making sure some of the foam covers your child's face. Mark where your child's shoulders touch the inside of the foam, and use these marks to cut armholes.

3
Make jagged cuts along the top and bottom of your foam. Think about the stump of a fallen tree, and mimic the deep V's and broken wood with your cuts. Make one deep V where your child's face will be, so he can see.

4
Spray one side of the foam with fabric adhesive, and spread fabric over the foam, pressing it down. Once dry, cut the fabric's edges to match the foam, and cut out the armholes in the fabric, too. Choose sturdy, brown fabric.
-
5
Paint vertical, crooked and jagged lines down the fabric in different shades of brown paint. Mimic the rough texture of tree bark as best you can. You could even sponge on a little green for moss in places .

6
Sew the foam into a cylinder with thick brown thread and an embroidery needle. Ask your child to put on brown clothing, and slip the cylinder over his head. His legs are the roots, and his arms can be old, crooked branches.
