How to Make a Men's Scarf

To make a men's scarf you do not need to know how to knit or crochet. Fleece fabric with a finished edge makes an attractive and fashionable scarf. Polyester fleece is designed to mimic the level of warmth provided by wool, at a fraction of wool's weight. Polyester fleece wicks moisture away from the wearer, it washes easily, it dries quickly and it does not fray the way woven fabric does, making it an ideal fabric for a simple men's scarf.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the fabric out on a table so it lies flat. Make a small mark with the tailor's chalk 1 inch in from each of the four corners.

    • 2

Cut the corners off using the scissors. This will give you an angled edge, which will be easier to sew around than a sharp, square corner.

    • 3

Thread the sewing machine with the complementary thread and set it to make a blanket or zigzag stitch. The blanket stitch is commonly used on fleece items, but a zigzag stitch will also provide a smooth finish.

    • 4

Fold the scarf in half the long way to find the center, and begin sewing from this point. Sew close to the edge and go all the way around the scarf. Overlap the seam by about 1/2 inch when you reach your starting point.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fleece is normally at least 54 inches wide and often as much as 60 inches, so 1/3 yard will make a scarf about 12 inches wide and 54 to 60 inches long. Check the fabric's width on the label on the top of the fabric bolt when you buy it to determine the length of the finished scarf.
