Create a new family tradition with a special fabric cupcake birthday decoration that can be used every year. This non-edible cupcake will sit center stage as a table or buffet centerpiece to mark the celebrated day. By using sturdy felt fabric the finished cupcake will hold its shape nicely. Make one fabric cupcake for the whole family to enjoy, or make each member their own cupcake using colors that correspond with their favorite cupcake flavors.
Things You'll Need
- Notebook paper
- Compass
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- 1/6-yard light green felt fabric
- 1/4-yard light pink felt fabric
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Hand sewing needle and thread
- Polyester stuffing
- Hot glue gun
- 2-inch red pompom
- 1-inch wide white eyelet ruffled trim, 1/2-yard

Draw a 5-inch circle on a sheet of notebook paper, using a compass. Cut out the circle. This is the pattern for the cupcake "paper" liner bottom. Pin the pattern to light green felt and cut out.

Measure and cut a light green rectangle 3-inches wide by 17-inches long, for the cupcake liner side. Measure and cut a light pink rectangle 7 1/2-inches wide by 30-inches long, for the cupcake frosting.

Fold the light green rectangle in half, matching the short ends. Pin the short ends together and sew using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Use a warm iron to press the seam open. You now have a light green fabric ring with the seam on the outside.

Measure and mark four equally spaced sections around one edge of the ring with straight pins. Fold the liner circle in half and then in half again. Mark each of the four folds along the outer edge with a straight pin. Unfold the circle. Match the pins on the fabric ring to the pins on the fabric circle and pin the two pieces together. Continue to match the gaps along the edges and pin. Sew the ring to the circle using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Trim the seam to an 1/8-inch. Turn the cupcake liner right side out.

Fold the light pink rectangle in half, matching the short ends. Pin the short ends together and sew a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Press the seam open. You now have a light pink fabric ring with the seam on the outside.

Hand sew a running stitch around one edge of the pink ring, a 1/2-inch from the edge. Slip the pink fabric ring over the light green cupcake liner, with the running stitch on the ring's top edge. Pull up the stitches of the running stitch to gather the pink ring around the liner. Match the running stitch edge with the top edge of the cupcake liner and the back seam of the liner with the back seam of the frosting. Pin the edges together. Sew using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

Fold the pink frosting ring upward. Fill the cupcake to halfway up the width of the pink frosting ring with polyester stuffing. Hand sew a running stitch around the top edge of the frosting ring, a 1/2-inch from the edge. Pull the stitches to gather the top of the frosting. Add more stuffing, if needed, before closing the top of the gathered opening. Knot and clip the thread.

Hot glue a 2-inch red pompom to the top of the frosting, over the gathered stitches. Measure and cut 1-inch wide white eyelet ruffled trim, 17-inches long. Starting at the back seam of the liner, apply a line of hot glue around the top of the liner, on the seam between the liner and the frosting. Place the eyelet trim over the glue, around the cupcake. Overlap the ends, applying hot glue between the overlap to secure.
