Corrosion on your battery cables or terminals can indicate an old or improperly functioning battery.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Select battery cables according to your battery's size and routing length.

  2. Step 2

Exercise caution when choosing ready-made cables because insulation can conceal the size of the gauge wire.

  3. Step 3

Avoid cables with bolt-on terminals because they cannot be properly sealed to prevent corrosion.

  4. Step 4

Check the cables for breaks, corrosion or stripped insulation.

  5. Step 5

Check that the terminals are tightly fitted to the ends of the cable.

  6. Step 6

Remove cables from the battery, negative first, and clean with a solution of baking soda and water.

  7. Step 7

Clean the terminal posts with the same solution.

  8. Step 8

Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the terminal posts. Reconnect the cables to the battery.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful not to apply too much petroleum jelly.
