How to Drive Forklifts on Grass
A forklift is a piece of machinery used around many retail and construction sites to lift, stack, move and rack loads. These machines are small in comparison to machines like a steam roller. They are easily driven along retail store aisles to remove and replace stock. Driving a forklift on hard flat surfaces only requires training and common sense. Driving on rough surfaces and grass can prove to be more of a challenge. Grass can be firm, but it can also be soft or muddy. You can easily sink into grass and get stuck. Use a few different techniques to make sure your equipment stays out of the mud.

1
Manually inspect your forklift daily for any suspicious fluids, smells or cracks. Distortion and wear of the forks should also be closely examined. If any excessive wear is found, do not operate the forklift until it is fixed.

2
Purchase wider front tires for your forklift if it will be maneuvering loads over grass. These wider front tires will give your piece of equipment more "float" on the grass. The weight of the load is distributed over a greater surface area, allowing you to relax while operating the vehicle because it is less likely to get stuck in the grass.

Purchase about a dozen pieces of wood, 4-by-8 inches. Lay these pieces down from top to bottom, creating two tracks for your forklift to drive on over the grass. The pieces of wood will hold the weight of the fork lift, while distributing the weight of the load over themselves. Lay the wood in a straight path from solid ground to your destination.
