How to Attach Music to a Powerpoint Slideshow

You can add music or voice audio files to a PowerPoint presentation slide show as long as it is in MP3 or WAV format. Some versions of PowerPoint accommodate MIDI files as well. Just remember that adding music also adds bulk to the size of your PowerPoint files, so if you are limited for size, try to add only files in MP3 format, as WAV files are one of the largest audio formats available. Make sure you continuously save your work as you edit your presentation to avoid losing your audio specifications.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your project in Microsoft PowerPoint. Navigate to the slide where you would like the music to begin. If you want to start the music as soon as you begin the presentation, make sure your cursor is on the first slide of the project.

    • 2

Choose the audio file you'd like to insert. Depending on which version of PowerPoint you are using, this action is executed differently. In PowerPoint 2007, you must click "Insert -> Sound -> Sound from File" to browse your computer for the file. In previous versions, select "Insert -> Movies and Sounds -> Sound from File" to bring up the same browse dialog box.

    • 3

Choose whether you'd like the audio file to play automatically as soon as you visit the slide, or if you'd like it to play when the audio file is clicked. If you choose the second option, an audio bell graphic appears in the slide, and you can click it to preview the sound.

Preview the audio at any time after you insert it by clicking the audio graphic in the slide and selecting the "Preview" button under the "Options" tab at the top.

Save your work. If you'd like to save your project as a slide show presentation, click "File -> Save As -> PowerPoint Show"; this way, you can open the project in slide show format and the audio will play automatically, if this is the audio selection you chose. Click on the audio button in the slide show format to play the file if you chose the "play when clicked" option.

Tips & Warnings

  • When the audio file is selected during the project creation, you can click the "Options" tab in the toolbar to select whether the audio file should loop until stopped, if it should play across multiple slides and how loud the volume should be.
