How to Edge Fleece Blankets

Hand-crafted fleece blankets will have a more finished appearance if you hand-stitch or knot the edge. A simple fringe cut or knotted edge is simple enough for a person who can not sew or a child to undertake. Fleece baby blankets have a lacy delicate look when you crochet a simple edging around them in pastel colors.

Instructions

  1. No Sew

    • 1

Lay the cloth square on a flat work surface with plenty of room. Measure and cut a 2-inch square from each of the four corners of the blanket.

    • 2

Place a piece of masking tape down the length of the blanket, lining it up with the area where you cut the squares out of the corners.

    • 3

Place a yardstick or ruler on one side of the blanket. Use the measurement as a guide and cut half- inch-wide slits from the outer edge of the blanket just to the edge of the tape.

    • 4

Remove the tape from the blanket. Leave the blanket as-is or tie a simple knot in each piece of fringe around the entire edge.

    • 5

Cut the fleece blanket fringe with pinking shears for a different look for the edging.

    Hand Sew

    • 6

Thread the large eye needle with a 30-inch piece of crochet cotton. Knot one end of the cotton.

    • 7

Push the needle up from the bottom at one corner of the blanket about a half-inch from the edge.

    • 8

Move the needle over toward the right and push it down through the fleece a half-inch away. Start pulling the cotton thread through the cloth.

    • 9

Thread the needle through the loop that the thread forms before it is pulled completely through the cloth.
Carefully pull it until the line of thread runs along the very edge of the cloth. The stitches look like a three-sided box.

    • 10

Move the needle over and come back up through the cloth as you did in step 2. Repeat steps 2 through 4 until the fleece blanket edging is finished. When you get to the end of the piece of thread you should make a small diagonal stitch over the last stitch to secure it to the blanket. Re-thread the needle with more cotton.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make decorative fringe edging by rounding the strip edges or cutting them to look like the peak on a fence picket.

  • You can use the blanket stitch as a base to crochet a simple edging around the blanket. Each blanket stitch counts as a chain stitch. Tie the crochet cotton or fine yarn to the first blanket stitch and proceed to crochet your favorite edging pattern.
