How to Replace Preloaded Hard Drives

Preconfigured computer systems often come with a low capacity hard drive installed. Due to this, many computer owners replace these low capacity and often low speed, hard drives with better aftermarket counterparts. Upgrading from the standard hard drive can significantly increase overall system efficiency and data capacity. The process of replacing a preloaded hard drive is an easy one which virtually any computer user can accomplish.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the computer from any electrical sources and remove the side access panel. This may require removing one or more thumbscrews from the rear face of the computer case.

    • 2

Locate the drive you want to replace. This drive will be located in a drive cage near the front face of the computer case.

    • 3

Unplug the data and power cables from the currently installed hard drive.

    • 4

Slide the currently installed hard drive out and away from the computer drive cage. This may require depressing a butting on the side of the drive to release it from the bay.

    • 5

Insert the new hard drive into the now free hard drive bay. Ensure that the data and power connectors are facing the rear of the computer's case.

    • 6

Connect the data and power cables to this new hard drive in the same manner they were connected to the previous hard drive.

    • 7

Replace the side access panel and reestablish any previously severed electrical connections.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to use an anti-static wrist strap or other method of dissipating static while working inside your computer to avoid shocking the system.
