How to Crochet a Halter Dress
Crochet can be used to make dresses for babies, women and girls of any size. For a simple option, try a halter-style sundress. Construct it by making the top first, and then adding a skirt in the length of your choice. Finish it with a halter tie and your dress is ready to wear. This option is easily customizable for any size, but you will need a basic understanding of crochet stitches, seaming and working in the round in order to complete your halter dress.

1
Estimate the amount of yarn you will need. Make a 6- by 6-inch single-crochet swatch in a worsted-weight cotton yarn. Weigh the swatch in ounces. Measure yourself, the intended wearer, or a garment of similar size to work out how many ounces of yarn you will need to purchase to complete your garment.

2
Crochet the bodice of the dress. Make a starting chain that is the same length as the measurement from the wearer's chest to her waist. This will form the top portion of the dress, so make sure to include an allowance for the bust. Single crochet across the chain, starting in the second chain from the hook and completing the row.
For all subsequent rows, chain one and single crochet in the back loops only of every stitch; this will give your finished garment a ribbed look that will add stretch to the dress. Continue to crochet this piece until it is long enough to wrap snugly around the wearer's body at chest level.

Sew the short edges of the bodice together using a large-eye blunt needle and a whip stitch. Attach your yarn to the bottom of this seam using a slip stitch and your crochet hook. Work one round of single crochet stitches evenly around the edge of the tube you have created. This will be the beginning of your skirt.

Fill out the skirt by alternating the following two pattern rounds. For round one, make two single crochet stitches in every stitch all the way around. For round two, make one single crochet stitch in every stitch around. When the skirt of your dress has reached its desired fullness, finish the skirt by repeating round two until the desired length is reached.

5
Add a scalloped edging to the edges of the skirt and top. For the final round of the skirt, make one single crochet stitch in the first stitch; then skip one stitch and make a shell in the following stitch by making three double crochet stitches in one stitch. Skip the next stitch and single crochet in the following stitch. Repeat around: single crochet, skip one, shell, skip one. Finish off, then attach your yarn at the top of the bodice and repeat this pattern for the neckline.

6
Attach your yarn in the front center of the bodice, directly opposite the back seam. Chain 150, or desired length for a tie around the neck. Slip stitch back down this chain and make a slip stitch back in the bodice. Repeat once more for a second tie, then fasten off and weave in the ends using a large-eye blunt needle. Tie the chain ties around the neck when you wear the dress for a breezy, halter style.

Tips & Warnings
Change the position of the ties for a different halter look; make them approximately 6 inches on either side of the bodice's center front position.
Crochet a wider strap by making four single crochet stitches into the top edge of the bodice, then crocheting back and forth in short rows to make a strap. End with a button hole and sew a button to the front of the bodice on the opposite side to attach the strap.
