How to Check a Filter on Outlook Express

Email filters not only sort messages you want to specific folders, but also block messages you don't want, including spam and messages from blocked email addresses. Like other email applications, Outlook Express lets you check the list of filters you have created within the program. You can view the filter, edit the filter or delete the filter. Filters within Outlook Express are known as message rules. The filters are accessed through the "Tools" menu.

Instructions

      Open Outlook Express by clicking on the program's icon on your computer's desktop or by clicking on the program's name on the "All Programs" menu.

      Click "Tools" and then "Message Rules."

      Click "Mail." The "Message Rules" dialog box will open. A list of your message rules (filters) will appear under the heading "These rules will be applied to Mail messages."

      Click on the message rule you want to view. Click "Modify..." and the "Edit Mail Rule" dialog box will open.

      Look in the section under the heading "3. Rule Description (click on an underlined value to edit it):." Read the details of the filter assigned to that message rule.

      Click on the underlined text next to the words "Where the From line" to edit the filter.

      Click "OK" when you done viewing or editing the message rule.

      Click "Remove" to delete the message rule, if desired.

      Click on the next message rule to view the contents of the filter.

      Click "OK" to exit the "Message Rules" dialog box.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also copy a message filter. Click on the message rule you want to copy. Click "Copy." The filter will appear in the list of message rules as "Copy of XXXX." With the "XXXX"s representing the name of the original message rule. Click on the copy of the message rule. Click "Modify" to change the filter's name and attributes.
