How to Crochet Men's Socks
Crocheted socks are not as popular as knitted socks, but they can be a warm, comfortable choice on a cold winter day. Crochet tends to make a denser, heavier sock that is more difficult to wear out--a good choice for guys who do not want to deal with delicate knits. Crocheted socks also make a good alternative to slippers in the house. The process of crocheting men's socks is similar to that of making socks for women. Men often prefer muted colors, and you may have to modify your sock pattern to fit larger feet.

1
Choose a yarn that will feel good to wear. Any yarn will work for this crochet method. Just be consistent. If you wish to use two different colors, make certain they are the same weight and fiber content. This will give you a more comfortable sock that will not shrink unevenly. The amount you need will depend on the size and height of the sock you intend to make.

2
Make a gauge swatch to determine whether your hook is the right size. Single crochet a square that is 2 or 3 inches across. If there are large holes in the fabric, you may need to use a smaller hook. If you find that size is difficult to pull the yarn through the loop, try a larger hook.

Measure the foot of the man who will wear the sock. Take the measurements across the toes, around the instep, around the heel and around the ankle. You should also measure the length of the foot. These measurements will help you create a pattern as you go.

4
Create the toe. Make a chain about 2 inches long. Single crochet along the chain, then down the other side. You will have a set of single crochets on each side of the original chain, making an oval or rectangle. Use this as the base to crochet in rounds, forming the toe. Increase two stitches at each end to shape the end of the sock toe. Continue until the toe is the correct width for the foot.

5
Crochet the body. Continue to crochet in rounds but leave out the increases. This creates the body of the sock. Some crocheters will make a small decrease in the instep, but this is optional. Create as many rounds as needed to reach the bend of the ankle.
-
6
Create the ankle. Make one more pass around the entire body of the sock, then begin to crochet the top half only. When you reach the side of the sock, create a chain equal to half the ankle measurement. Continue crocheting rounds using this chain and the top half of the sock as a base. Keep going until the sock is as tall as you like. This makes a hole where the heel should be.

7
Add the heel. This part is made just like the toe, only in reverse. Return to the heel opening, and single crochet all the way around. Continue crocheting in rounds, but make a double decrease at each end. Eventually, you should close the heel, except for a gap 1 to 2 inches wide. Slip stitch the gap, and the sock is finished.
