How to Cut Out Things in Photoshop
Photoshop is a photo manipulation application for use by amateurs and professionals. At times you may want to use Photoshop to cut out a section of an image for use in a collage, or to change the image's background. There are many different tools and methods you can use to cut out an image in Photoshop, but there is a specific way to give you a smooth, clean edge around your image.

Create Layer Mask

Open your picture by selecting "File>Open" and browsing to your image. Click OK.

In the Tools palette, set the Foreground color to Black, and the Background color to White. Click on the Foreground or Background swatch to open the color options box. Select the desired color and click "OK."

Select the Brush Tool. Change the Master Diameter to 10px and the Hardness to 0%.

Create a new layer mask by highlighting the image, then clicking the Add Layer Mask icon in the Layers palette.

Zoom in close, to approximately 400 percent. Use the Brush tool to outline your image. Hold down shift if you wish to draw a completely straight line. Change the size of your brush as necessary for more detailed areas.
Cut Out Image

Hold "Alt" and click the layer mask. Your image should now be completely white, with the outline of the cutout marked in black.

Select the Magic Wand tool. Ensure the the Contiguous option is checked, and that the Anti-Alias option is not checked. Then click the areas that you wish to dispose of.

Click "Select>Modify>Expand" and select 5px. Change the Background color to black and then press the "Delete" key.

If there are any smaller areas that were missed by the original cut, these will now be highlighted in white. Select the brush tool and change the foreground color to black. Go over these small areas with the brush tool so that they turn black.

Click the layer mask while holding down the "Alt" key, and the layer will now appear cut out from the rest of the image.
