How to Fix Animal Eyes in Adobe Photoshop Elements 6

Red eye is caused by the reflection of your camera's flash off the retina of your subject. Though the shine in your subject's eye can also be a bright off-white, the color of the reflection is usually red due to the blood in your subject's eye. Red eye is not just a human phenomenon and can also occur in pet eyes for the same reasons. In-camera red eye reduction features are not always successful, but removal removal of an animal's red eye in Photoshop Elements is relatively straightforward and simple, even for a beginner.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the photograph you wish to fix in Photoshop Elements by accessing the "File" menu and choosing "Open." Navigate to the image file, highlight it and click "Open."

    • 2

Select black as your foreground color, or press "D" on your keyboard to do this automatically. Red eye typically only affects animals' pupils, which can be painted over with black.

    • 3

Select the "Paintbrush" tool. Adjust the size and shape of the brush to match the size and shape of your animal's pupil. If you are painting a cat's eye, lower the "Roundness" value to match the slitted shape of a cat's eye. Non-feline animals tend to have rounder pupils.

    • 4

Paint over the red eye area of the animal's eye by clicking and dragging your cursor over the red eye area until it is completely covered with black.

    • 5

Change the Layer Blending mode for your painted layer from "Normal" to "Saturation" in the Layers pane. This will let the natural luminosity and texture of the pupil show through, which will restore the curvature and glint of the eye.

    • 6

Duplicate the layer by dragging it to the "Create a new layer" button. This will create a new layer with identical painting and blending options as the layer you are copying.

    • 7

Change the Layer Blending mode of the new layer to "Hue." This will change the color of the reflection to a blacker color, removing the yellowish or reddish glow from the eye.

    • 8

Select the "Eraser" tool and remove any areas of painting that extend beyond the pupil.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you find that the effect leaves your animal's eyes looking flat or unrealistic, lower the opacity of the two painted layers in the Layers pane. An opacity of approximately 80 percent will restore some of the redness in the eyes, but will make the photograph look more natural.
