How to Store Jewels in a Safe Deposit Box

While not convenient, storing jewelry in a safe deposit box does offer peace of mind. Banks provide security that many homes don't have. If you have highly valuable jewelry or live in an area in which you're concerned about theft, storing your jewelry at the bank is a great option.

Instructions

1. Package each piece separately. Put the valuables in jewelry cases with a soft lining or fabric pouches designed for jewelry.

2. Keep an inventory of each piece you plan to store. To help keep track of what jewelry you have on hand and which went to the bank, write down each piece and where it's located.

3. Insure your jewelery. While banks offer security, the FDIC doesn't cover items in safe deposit boxes. If something should happen to your jewelry while at the bank, there is no guarantee you'd be compensated for a loss. So have your own insurance to cover the jewels.

4. Visit your bank. Account holders usually get a better deposit box rental price than people without accounts.

5. Rent a safe deposit box. Select the size that will fit your jewelry. Fill out the safe deposit rental form. Everyone who will have access to the box needs to sign the rental agreement.

6. Place the jewels in the box. Make sure you keep the key in a safe place.
