How to Fix the Sound on an AVI File

AVI video files contain sound as well as video. The audio of an AVI file can become garbled from the file being copied or from a disc error on the hard drive. Fixing the sound on an AVI file can be done on a PC using an AVI Codec Repair program, of which there are a number of free versions available. The AVI Codec Repair program will fix the sound automatically so the video and audio play correctly on the AVI file.

      Download and install an AVI Codec Repair program to the desktop of the PC. The VirtualDUBMOD program is one such program available to download at no cost. Restart the PC after the installation has finished.

      Run the AVI Codec Repair program. Go to the "File" menu and select "Add File" from the drop-down menu. Navigate in the window that appears to the AVI file that has sound problems. Click once on the AVI file. Click the "Open" button on the window to load the AVI file into the AVI Codec Repair program.

      Click the "Video" menu and select "Direct Stream Copy" from the drop-down menu. Click the "Streams" menu and select "Stream List" from the drop-down menu.

      Right-click on the name of the damaged AVI file in the left column of the window that appears. Select "Full Processing Mode" from the pop-up menu.

      Right-click the name of the AVI file again and select "Compression" from the pop-up window. Select "Lamep MP3" from the left column of the window that appears. Select "48000 Hz, 192 kbps CBR, Stereo" from the right column. Close the window by clicking on "OK."

      Go to "File" and select "Save AVI" from the drop-down menu. Name the AVI file that is having its sound fixed in the open column at the top of the window that appears. Click the "Save" button to save the fixed AVI file to the computer's desktop. Quit the AVI Codec Repair program.

Tips & Warnings

  • You might need to run the saved AVI file through the AVI Codec Repair program a second time in order to fix the sound completely.

  • Do not have other video conversion programs running while you are using AVI Codec Repair.
