How to Convert Kilowatts to HP

Kilowatts (kW) and horsepower are two units that were designed to measure power. Horsepower (HP) is an imperial unit, used in the United States, while the kilowatt is a metric unit used just about everywhere else in the world. If you were comparing two devices and one listed the power in horsepower and the other listed the power in kilowatts, you would need to convert the kilowatts to horsepower to make an accurate comparison. To make the conversion, you need to know either how many kilowatts are equal to one HP or how many HP are equal to one kilowatt.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how many kilowatts you want to convert to horsepower.

    • 2

Decide whether you want to multiply by the number of HP per kW or divide by the number of kW per HP. The result will be the same no matter which you chose. If you want to divide, skip to Step 4.

    • 3

Multiply the number of kW by 1.3410 to convert to HP. For example, if you wanted to convert 100 kW to HP, you would get 134.1 HP.

    • 4

Divide the number of kW by 0.7456 to convert to HP. For example, if you wanted to convert 100 kW to HP, you would get 134.1 HP.
