How to Use a Coffee Grinder to Grind Grain Into Flour

Everyday household appliances can grind grain into flour. If you need a lot of flour, the best home appliance to use is a blender but if you only need a small amount, you can use a coffee grinder to create very fine flour from most grains. Making your own flour at home saves money because grain is about one-third cheaper than buying the same product in flour form. Instructions

    • 1

Select the grain you want to use to grind into flour. Use smaller grains in a coffee grinder such as rice, millet and oats for the best results. Some larger grains may not grind as fine as you need them due to the fact that a coffee grinder is a small unit.

    • 2

Carefully look through the grain you choose for loose pieces of metal, teeth or bone. Especially if you purchase grain in bulk, some foreign material may be mixed in with the grain that can damage your grinder. Separate any foreign material and discard.

    • 3

Wash and dry the grain if it was purchased in bulk to remove any residue acquired during transportation. Skip this step if you purchase grain that is pre-washed and packaged. The grain must be completely dry before grinding or else it will clump during the process.

    • 4

Fill the coffee grinder 3/4 of the way to the top. Leave a 1/4 room at the top for the grain to move around as it is grinding.

    • 5

Set the grinder to the finest setting if the grinder has this setting option. If not, press the one button and grind the grain until it is as fine as powder. Stop the grinder, open the lid and use a spoon to loosen any grain that's compacted on the bottom. Close the lid and grind again until all the grain is uniformly fine.

Empty the contents into a plastic storage container and store in the refrigerator until ready to use. Use a spoon to remove all the flour from the bottom of the grinder. Wipe out the grinder with a dry cloth.
