How to Create a POI CSV File
Global Positioning System (GPS) enthusiasts interested in creating a custom Point of Interest (POI) Comma-Separated Values (CSV) file containing information, such as one's favorite restaurant or gas station, can do so by using Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Excel supports the CSV file format. Creating POI CSV files requires GPS users to know the longitude and latitude of the location they are trying to create a POI CSV file for. One of the easiest ways to get this information is by using Google Maps.

Visit the Google Maps homepage, enter the address of your POI location in the search field and then select "Search Maps" (See Resources).

Use the Google maps "Hand" tool to move the POI location to the center of the map, and then paste "javascript:void(prompt('',gApplication.getMap().getCenter()));" in your browser. A dialog box appears containing the longitude and latitude of your POI location. Note that the first group of numbers is the longitude while the second group is the latitude.

Open Microsoft Excel, and then enter your POI location details in separate cells as follows "Longitude, Latitude, Name, Description." Use decimal degrees for coordinates. Be sure that you start a new location from a new line.

Create a POI CSV file by clicking on "File," selecting "Save As," entering a file name, choosing "CSV" as the file type, and then selecting "Save." You have successfully created a POI CSV file.
