How to Create a Caricature From an Image
Caricature drawing is the art of capturing and emphasizing features of a subject in a way that is often satirical and designed to showcase the subject in a humorous way. Artists who do caricatures often make a living as illustrators for newspapers and magazines. Some caricature artists make a living doing custom caricature sketches at fairs and amusement parks. Caricature drawing takes not only drawing talent, but the talent to spot what it is about a subject that makes him special and to bring that out in caricature style.

1
Select an image of someone you want to turn into a caricature. The image can be of a family member or a friend. It can be an image of a celebrity from a magazine. You can even make a caricature from an image of your pet. Stay with an image that has elements you know you can emphasize to create a caricature.

2
Draw a light sketch of the image you want to turn into a caricature. Keep the lines light until you modify the image into a caricature. Look at the image you sketch and decide what you can magnify. If the subject has a big, bulbous nose, erase the nose on your drawing and enlarge the nose. Stay with the basic shape of the subject's nose, just emphasize its size. If your subject has a prominent chin or wide forehead, bring those features out by erasing the lines of your rough sketch and building upon the caricature features you want to represent. Don't add too many or you risk ruining the overall effect.

Go over your rough sketch once you have the caricature elements in place. Darken the lines. Add shading around the edges of the nose and to creases in the forehead. Use the shading to further emphasize the elements of the caricature that you're using with your subject. The idea isn't to make up physical traits, but to enhance traits your subject already has. Your finished caricature should be recognizable by anyone who knows the subject.
