How to Make a Hat Using Sewing Patterns
Hats are cool. They have a way of accenting almost any outfit readily and easily. Buying hats can be expensive. Making your own hat is a great alternative; it is also a lot of fun. There are so many patterns and styles to choose from that you can make a great hat with very little effort. A fleece hat provides a good example.
Things You'll Need
- 1/2 yard fleece
- Spool of synthetic sewing thread
- Universal sewing needle
- Sewing scissors or pinking sheers
- Sewing machine (optional)
- Accessories (optional)

Gather the materials before you start assembling your hat. This will minimize shrinking and make cleaning the hat easier.

Cut the fleece into a rectangle that is 16 by 21 inches long, and fold the bottom edge up 2 inches, twice. This will create a brim that should fit comfortably around your head. Position the fleece lengthwise to take advantage of its maximum stretching capabilities.

Measure 1/2 inch down from the top of the brim, and sew--either by hand or machine--along this edge. The stitches should be about 1/4 inch long.

Fold the hat in half horizontally, so that the right sides are facing. Keeping a 1/4 to 1/2 inch seam allowance. Sew along the edge of the hat for 5 inches. Leave the remaining part of the seam open to make the top of the hat.

Gather the open portion of the hat, and hand-sew it together tightly to make the top of portion of the hat.

Turn the hat right side out, and carefully cut 1/4-inch-wide fringe strips down to the top of your hat.

Accessorize the hat with buttons and trims according to personal preference.

Tips & Warnings
Use sewing templates to accurately cut out pattern pieces. Pin them in place before cutting your fabric. You can also make templates out of card stock. Weigh it down on your fabric and use a rotary cutter to cut out pattern pieces.
