How to Make Children's Fleece Hats

Keep your child's head warm and styling this winter with a fun fleece hat. Fleece is a great fabric for children's hats because it's cozy and warm, but it doesn't itch. Parents will love how washable it is while children enjoy the lightweight feel of the fabric. Fleece hats trap heat and ward off moisture. They don't shrink when washed. Make a fleece hat as a gift for a special child in your life and watch them enjoy the outdoors.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a measuring tape and measure the size of the child's head, around their ears. Divide this measurement by four to determine the width for four separate fabric panels. Add 1/4 inch on each side of the panels for seam's allowance.

    • 2

Cut the four panels out of fleece material. The hat should be approximately 10 inches long.

    • 3

Pin the panels together on the correct side of the long ends. Alternate colors if you have more than one. Sew the panels together, but make sure you leave a 1/4-inch seam allowance between each one. Sew the sides of the end panels together so the material makes a tube.

    • 4

Trim the seam allowance as closely as possible, opening the seams with your fingers. Avoid hot flattening tools like an iron since they could melt the fabric.

    • 5

Keep the sides together and flatten the child's fleece hat. Two panels should now lie right on top of the other two fabric panels. Match their center seams.

    • 6

Sew the cuff on the child's fleece hat by folding the fabric up approximately 3 inches, then again 1/4 inch. Add stitches close to the edge to secure. Turn hat so it is now inside out.

    • 7

Place pins along the top of the fleece hat and sew it, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Trim the seam as closely as possible.

    • 8

Connect the two corners at the top of the child's fleece hat together using a single stitch. With strong thread, bring a needle through the inside of a corner then down through the other. Pull gently on the thread until it is tight and the corners meet in the center. Secure the thread. Flip the hat until it is right-side out.
