Instructions

    • 1

Read the label on your plant to determine its sun and water needs. Plants that need a higher amount of sun will do best when situated next to a south-facing window. Plants that prefer shade work in low-light situations. Flowering plants tend to require more light than green plants, though some flowering plants may perform in shade. Determine where you want to place your plant based upon its light needs.

    • 2

Plan how far from the ceiling to hang your plant. Will your plant hang at eye level? Should it be up higher? Will you hang three to five plants against one wall at different heights? Drop a string down from the ceiling until it reaches the desired height, then measure the string against a ruler to find out how far down you want your plant to hang.

    • 3

Screw a plant hook into the ceiling at the location you intend to put the plant. Once the hook is as tight as you can get it with your fingers, insert the blade end of a screwdriver through the hook and continue to tighten. The extra leverage should help you thread the hook more one or two more rounds into the ceiling.

    • 4

Remove your plant from its plastic container and replant into the container you have chosen. Garden centers will have a large selection of hanging planters that come with rope or twine. If you intend to use the plant's plastic container, consider beautifying it with macrame or decorative ribbon.

    • 5

Measure the rope or twine that came with your planter to make sure it's long enough. If it isn't, measure another length of twine using measuring tape. Hemp or jute are two common materials that can be used to hang your plants.

    • 6

Thread the rope or twine through your hanging container using the holes on the side of the container. Knot the twine twice so that it's secure. Attach the twine to the hook and adjust the plant if necessary so that it hangs evenly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove your hanging plants from their hooks to water them. Water plants in the sink.

  • Hanging plants can be planted in soil-less plant mixes to reduce the weight of the hanging basket.
