How to Tune the Colors on an LCD
Though the factory specified default color settings on an LCD TV may look fine for some, there are those of us who want to ensure we're getting the highest quality from our new HDTVs. By using the menu system built in to your LCD TV, you can adjust aspects of the color settings such as balance and temperature to ensure that the image you're seeing on screen is as close to perfect as it is can be.

1
Place the callibration DVD in the DVD player that is attached to your LCD. If you don't have a DVD player attached to your LCD TV, you can tune your colors against regular programming. It won't work quite as well as a calibration disc, but it will still allow you to properly tune your TV's colors.

2
Turn on the TV.

-
3
Press the "Menu" button on the remote control. Navigate to the "Settings" menu.
-
4
Select the "Color" option. Here you will be able to use the arrow keys on the remote to change the balance of color on your LCD TV. Use the left arrow button on the remote to see less of a certain color on screen, and use the right arrow button to see more.
-
5
Adjust the color temperature. If you select "Cold," white colors on TV will have a blueish hue to them. If you select "Neutral," white colors on TV will appear a normal white color. If you select "Warm," white colors on TV will have an orangey hue to them.

6
Adjust the tint. The "Tint" setting on an LCD television set controls how much of the colors red, blue and green appear on screen. Just like when you adjusted the basic "Color" settings, you can adjust the "Tint" on your TV by using the left and right arrows on your unit's remote control.
-
7
Select "Save and Exit" when you're finished tuning the colors on your LCD TV. This will save your changes and exit the on-screen menu, returning you to your normal programming.

Tips & Warnings
Calibration DVDs are specially designed DVDs that allow you to tune the colors on your LCD television using a specially designed visual reference. You can buy a standalone calibration DVD at an electronics store, but some DVDs you already own may have "color bar" features that are used for this purpose. Specifically, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs that are produced by the Criterion Collection all come with a "color bar" feature to allow you to properly tune your TV.
Ultimately, there is no one "correct" way to tune the colors on your LCD television set. When you alter your TV's settings, keep in mind that you are trying to reach a level where the picture is both comfortable to watch and pleasing to the eye. This is a matter of personal preference, not fact. If it helps, exit out of the main menu every so often to see your new settings displayed on-screen. If further adjustments are necessary, you can always return to the "Settings" menu and try again.
