How to Use Ghost to Clone a Drive

Hard drive cloning is useful when a large amount of data needs to be transferred from one storage device to another. It's an easy way to back up your system, or it can be used to transfer all the data from one hard drive to another efficiently. "Norton Ghost" is a paid hard drive cloning program that allows you to not only clone to a new hard drive, but also manage and partition it after the data has been cloned.

Start your computer and open "Norton Ghost."

    • 3

Click "Ghost Advanced" from the menu on the left side of the program's window.

    • 4

Select "Clone" and click on "Next".

    • 5

Select the hard drive you want to clone as the "Source", and the hard drive you want to clone to as the "Destination."

Click "Next" until you reach a task summary window. Review the information and click "Run Now". The process will take a while, depending on how much data you're cloning. Once it if finished, "Ghost" will reboot your computer and load your old hard drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Back up any necessary information such as system files or drivers before beginning the cloning process.

  • Windows does not support booting from external USB hard drives, so you will not be able to use this type of drive as a bootable device even with an operating system on it.
