How to Fix a Mac Bluetooth Mouse

Although there are many Bluetooth mouse options on the market that are compatible with Mac computers, only the Magic Mouse is designed and produced by Apple for Mac computers. The Magic Mouse features support for some of the multi-finger gestures that Apple has become known for and has far more advanced technology than traditional mouses. Unfortunately, when something goes wrong with the mouse, it's no more than a paperweight.

Instructions

  1. Software fixes

    • 1

Reset your System Preferences. If there are certain features that are not working on the Magic Mouse, then check the System Preferences. Do this by clicking on the Open Apple and go to System Preferences and clicking on the Mouse icon. It could be that the options that you are trying to use have not yet been enabled, such as right button clicking.

    • 2

Update your software. Click Open Apple and select Software Update. If you cannot update your software using this automatic search and download feature, go to the Apple website and download each update individually.

    • 3

Download drivers for other browsers that you may be using such as Firefox and Chrome. The Magic Mouse is mainly designed to utilize its scrolling features with Safari, but there are also wireless drivers available to enable the Magic Mouse to scroll both vertically and horizontally in the Firefox and Google Chrome browsers. See second reference below for links to these drivers.

    Hardware fix (Mac Pro only)

    • 4

Open the casing for your Mac Pro. Some users have discovered that Apple failed to correctly connect wires labeled "1", "2", "3" and "BT" to the Bluetooth Board which is located under the second SATA drive and behind the logic board. See the third reference link for detailed images of this location in your tower.

    • 5

      Disconnect all four wires.

    • 6

Reconnect antenna "1" to the Bluetooth module, antenna "2" to the upper airport module, antenna "3" to the lower airport module and leave antenna "BT" disconnected.

    • 7

Put the casing back on the Pro and you will be ready for a Bluetooth connection. You will know you did the wiring wrong if your wireless is affected negatively.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dead batteries are also a common reason for mouse malfunction. Check the remaining power by clicking on the blue Apple, going to System Preferences and clicking on the Mouse icon. This will tell you how much power, if any at all, is left in your mouse. If the battery is lower than 20%, consider changing the batteries to see if performance improves.
