How to Plant a Cherry Tree From a Seed

Most fruit trees are grown from seedlings because of their abundant availability at nurseries and growing centers. Fruit trees, such as cherry trees, also can be grown from seeds, however the process is more difficult. You cannot simply place a cherry pit in the ground and expect it to grow. Instructions

    • 1

Obtain fully ripened cherries from the supermarket or by picking them. Fully ripened cherries are available from May through early July, depending on the climate in which you live.

    • 2

Open each cherry with a knife or your fingers, and remove the pit. Collect more seeds than you need, since not all of the cherry pits will germinate successfully.

    • 3

Place a mixture of 50 percent peat moss and 50 percent sand in an old coffee can or plastic food container. Mix the two thoroughly to combine. Amounts will vary based on the size of the container, but the thickness of the mixture should be at least 2 inches from the bottom of the container.

    • 4

Push each cherry pit a half-inch into the moss and sand mixture.

    • 5

Water the mixture with approximately 1 to 1.5 cups of water. The mixture should be moist to the touch but not soggy.

    • 6

Place the container in a refrigerator or other cold location that maintains a constant temperature of 33 to 41 degrees F.

    • 7

Allow the seeds to remain in the cold location for 90 to 150 days.

    • 8

Wait until fall or the next spring, and use a spade to dig 2-inch-deep holes in a location with well-drained soil. Each hole must be 18 inches apart to accommodate the fully grown trees.

    • 9

Remove the cherry pits from the container, and place one seed into each hole. Cover each hole completely with soil.

    • 10

Water the area where the seeds are planted with 1 to 2 inches of water per week.
