How to Rename a Folder With a MacBook

If you are accustomed to performing basic tasks on a PC, such as renaming files and folders, you will find that the steps are a little different on a MacBook. You will notice that there is no "Rename" option if you right-click on one of your MacBook's folders, but it is just as easy to change the name of a folder on a MacBook as it is on a PC.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the folder you want to rename.

    • 2

Click on the folder and press the "Return" key on your MacBook's keyboard.

    • 3

Type the new name of the folder.

    • 4

Press "Return" to save the new name of the folder.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you see a lock in the corner of the folder, the folder is locked and you must unlock it before you can rename it. Right-click on the folder, click "Get Info" and clear the check next to "Locked."

  • Apple recommends that users avoid renaming application folders and those that were originally on the system. If you do change the name of an application folder and have problems using the application, change the name back or reinstall the software.
