How to Add on More Feet to a Dog Run Cable
You love your dog and want what is best for him. You give him the best food, toys, and love that you can. Unfortunately wanting what is best often comes with an expensive price tag so you look for ways to cut those expenses where you can, without cutting back on the care you give your dog. By adding footage to an existing dog run cable, you can save some of the expense you would incur in purchasing a complete new one.
Things You'll Need
- Cable cutters
- Vinyl coated wire rope, sized to match your existing dog run cable and the length you want to add
- 2 ferrule sets, sized to match your existing dog run cable
- Swaging tool
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut the cable behind the loop end of the existing dog run cable that has the snap hook attached. This will be the easiest end to work with. Be care not to fray the end of the cable as it will make it much more difficult to work with later.
-
2
Slide one side of the ferrule onto the cut end of the existing dog run cable, leaving the end of the ferrule flush with the end of the cable.
-
-
3
Slide the new vinyl coated wire rope into the ferrule from the opposite direction of your existing dog run cable. Make sure you are leaving the cable end flush with the ferrule end.
-
4
Place the ferrule into the swaging tool and crimp twice. Check to make sure that you have a good crimp and the cables are secure in the ferrule.
-
5
Remove the snap hook from the loop end of the existing dog run cable that you cut in step one. Use the wire cutters to cut the old loop, thus freeing the snap hook.
-
6
Slide the ferrule onto the end of the new cable, leaving 12 inches of cable between the ferrule and the end of the cable.
-
7
Thread the cable through the snap hook and create a loop by sliding the end of the cable back through the ferrule that you added in step 6.
-
8
Crimp the ferrule using the swaging tool. Crimp twice and make sure that the cables are secure in the ferrule.
