How to Preserve a Split Rail Fence
Split rail fences are constructed of 8- to 10-foot lengths of split wood rails. The rails are either stacked in a zigzag pattern on the ground or attached to upright posts. Split rail fences have long been used to border pasture and farmland and as boundaries. To help reduce the negative impact of weather on the fencing, you can apply a wood sealer. Sealers are available from various manufacturers and are easy to apply with a minimum of equipment. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Wash the fence to remove dirt and debris which may interfere with applying the waterproofing. Use a stiff bristle brush, garden hose or pressure washer to clean the split rail fence. Allow to dry thoroughly.

2
Pour the waterproofing into a pump spray container. You may use a garden type or specific waterproofing sprayer. Attach the top to the sprayer and pump the handle to build pressure in the tank.

3
Spray the waterproofing onto the split rail fence. Apply an even coat of sealant to the fence without saturating the wood. Direct the nozzle of the sprayer into hard-to-reach areas for complete coverage. Allow the fence to dry for several hours.

4
Repeat the process to apply another coat of waterproofing sealant. Allow to dry thoroughly and apply a third coat if necessary.
-
5
Inspect the fence after 2 to 3 days to make sure the the rails are completely covered and the sealant is thoroughly dry. Avoid handling the fence rails or allowing animals near the fence until it is dry.
