How to Register a Microsoft Software Product

Registering any product that you purchase from Microsoft can be a good idea. It lets Microsoft know that you have legally purchased your product, which is information they will need to refer to if you ever call for customer service related issues. It also puts you on a mailing list to be informed of new product updates, which you will then get for free because you registered. Registration of all Microsoft software products can be done through its web page.

Instructions

    • 1

      Go to Microsoft.com.

    • 2

Type the name of the product you want to register into the "Search" field.

    • 3

Click the magnifying glass icon to search for your product's Web page.

    • 4

Click the "Activate" button. The official term used by Microsoft to describe this process is "Activation," but it performs the same job as standard software registration.

    • 5

Call the telephone number that is listed on screen for your area. These telephone numbers all refer to different areas of the country, so be sure you're calling the one that is closest to you. The telephone number's location will be listed next to the number itself. Have the product identification number that came in the packaging with your software ready to tell the customer service representative that you speak to.

    • 6

Enter the "Confirmation Number" that the customer support representative gives you into the box that appears when you open the program you are trying to register. Once you have done this your product will have been registered in Microsoft's informational database, and the program itself will know that it's been registered and will allow you to use it.
