How to Make a Heart Pendant

Whether you make one for Valentine's Day or for any reason, heart pendants make meaningful gifts for yourself or a loved one. Creating a heart pendant out of crystal adds even more meaning and function. Quartz crystal brings balance and re-energizes your energy field when you wear it, according to Anne Bode, M.D., of the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. Rose quartz affects the emotions, bringing a sense of calm--ideal for a heart pendant. Purchase crystal beads at craft stores or at jewelry making shops.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 7 inches of gold-plated wire with a ruler and use your wire cutter to cut it.

    • 2

Fold the cut wire in half. Using your needle-nose pliers, pinch the fold to make a point.

    • 3

Measure 1 1/2 inches down from the point of the folded wire. Wrap the wire around the circumference of the knitting needle making the curve of half of a heart shape. Do the same procedure on the other side.

    • 4

Pull each side apart. You now have a heart shaped wire.

    • 5

Place about sixteen 3- to 4-mm crystal beads onto the wire, starting with one side of the wire heart. Stick the end of the wire into each bead, threading the beads until you come to the point or bottom of that side of the heart. Place a piece of transparent tape on the end of the wire to temporarily keep the beads from slipping off.

    • 6

Repeat threading the crystal beads on the opposite side of the heart until you arrive at the heart point and place a piece of tape on the end.

    • 7

Secure and seal the bottom of your wire heart by squeezing both wires ends together using your needle-nose pliers.

    • 8

Slip one 5-mm crystal bead onto the two, squeezed wire ends. Remove the tape pieces.

    • 9

Bend the two wire ends up to secure the 5-mm bead, then snip off the excess wire at the center of the 5-mm bead with your wire cutter. You now have a crystal heart pendant you can wear with a gold chain in your choice of length.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan to use different bead sizes for your heart, lay out the beads for each side ahead of time in the order you desire.

  • Use your imagination when using different crystal bead sizes on the same heart. For example, start out on one side of the heart with two of each size, starting with 3-mm beads up to 6 mm, then reversing them down to 3 mm.

  • Use a combination of rose and clear quartz crystal beads, or other combinations of crystal beads, to make your heart pendant.

  • Buy silver or silver-plated wire for your heart instead of gold.
