How to Bind & Create a Book

Students put a lot of thought and effort into writing to meet the requirements of some elementary lesson plans. Some teachers make this task more interesting by having the students create their own books. Creating a book and binding it shows the students that their work is special and helps their work hold up over time. The bound book is a great keepsake for their bookshelves at home, and it can be a great personal gift for someone they love.

Instructions

  1. Creating the Book

    • 1

Think about the size of your book. Some books have lots of pages, while others are shorter. Think about how you want the pages to look with words and pictures. Some books have pictures on every page, others have them every few pages and still other books have no images.

    • 2

Gather all text and illustrations and arrange them until you are happy with the way they look in a book format. Create the title page, which has the title of the book and the name of the author on it.

    • 3

Add a front and back cover to the book. Use stiff paper or cardboard for the front and back cover to protect the pages.

    Binding the Book

    • 4

Punch holes at equal distances on the left side of the front cover. Do this with the pages of the book, making sure that the holes match up with the ones on the front cover. You can do this by holding the front cover on top of the paper and inserting the hole puncher through the hole that has already been made. Do the same with the back cover.

    • 5

Double-check to make sure all the papers are in the proper order. Rearrange them if necessary to ensure that every page and every image is in its intended spot. Your book should look like a stack of papers with all the holes lined up on the left side.

    • 6

Choose some yarn or ribbon and thread it through the bottom hole of all pages and both covers. Loosely tie it to make sure the papers are all secure, and then open the book to make sure that the pages still open comfortably. If the yarn or ribbon is tied too tightly, the book won't open completely. When the tying is perfect, not too loose and not too tight, knot it so that the papers are secured together and the yarn or ribbon won't come undone.

    • 7

Repeat this tying step with the other holes, cutting the ribbon or yarn after each hole. Add small bows if you want to make your book look pretty.
