How to Raise Money for School Computers

Schools often need to raise money for various things like equipment, books, uniforms, or for a sport or extracurricular team. Computers, particularly nowadays, are a common item that schools need. Many of the old, dinosaur-like computers that schools were able to tolerate in the past, simply do not cut it for today's sophisticated programs and software. Schools often need computers to furnish a school library, classrooms or sometimes even a graphics lab. Raising money for computers usually requires large sums of money.

Instructions

  1. Yard Sale

    • 1

Ask the parent-teacher organization to be in the charge of the fundraising drive. They're the obvious choice as they're a big organization and have a relationship with the administration and the students.

    • 2

Conduct an enormous yard sale on the school athletic field. Spend a week encouraging students and parents to bring in old clothes, furniture, appliances, ceramics, toys, books and CDs.

    • 3

Collect all the items and keep them in a storage area of the school until the day of the yard sale. Keep your prices low and make sure that everyone knows that all proceeds will go to the school. Send home letters with students to encourage participation. If everyone participates, you could raise at least $1,000.

    Product Drive

    • 4

Start a product drive. Product drives are a typical form of fundraising when children sell anything from candy to wrapping paper. Choose traditional items for children to sell, such as chocolate or consider using a more desirable product to maximize your profits, like gas station gift cards and iTunes cards.

    • 5

Buy the product in bulk. Redistribute the product to students and teachers with instructions to resell the product to friends and family at a designated higher price.

    • 6

Set a clear deadline. Make sure that children are accountable for selling all the products they take.

    Revenue Sharing

    • 7

Register online with a charitable online shopping mall such as Amazon.com. Once your school is registered, if someone makes a purchase, the school gets 5% of the price paid.

    • 8

Go to affiliate-program.amazon.com. Register with your email address. Once you're registered, you'll be given your associate's link.

    • 9

Give your link to every student, parent, teacher and administrator at your school. Instruct them to pass it on to everyone they know (email is generally best for this). Explain that everyone should shop at Amazon.com through the link and that the school will receive a small percentage of the profits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another idea: Start a raffle and ask local businesses to donate prizes to the raffle. Approach businesses that the school already has a relationship with or that are well-liked by the community.

  • In Steps 2 and 3, a bake sale, though traditional, is a great event to have in conjunction with the yard sale.

  • Approach local companies and electronics stores, and ask if they'd like to donate any computers to your school.

  • It helps to have an estimate of what computers your school would like to buy and how many you'll need, so that you know exactly how much money your school needs to raise.
