How to Improve VoIP Upload Quality

VoIP (voice over IP) service is a method of using your Internet connection to transmit telephone calls. Available over most broadband connections, the service can offer a sound quality equal to that found with the use of landline-based telephones or cell phones. At times, you may suffer sound quality degradation, because of the upload quality of your connection. You can improve the sound quality by increasing the quality of your connection to your VoIP service. Improving the upload quality should get rid of any static, choppy sounds, echoes or dropped connections that you're experiencing.

Things You'll Need

  • Integrated speaker and microphone headset
  • Dedicated VoIP connector
  • Telephone

Instructions

    • 1

Check your computer specifications against the recommended specifications of your VoIP provider. If your computer does not meet specifications, upgrade the areas that do not comply.

    • 2

Change the input device that you're using for your VoIP connection. If using a laptop or standalone microphone, switch to a headset rig containing an integrated headphone with microphone. A microphone with bad audio pickup requires additional processing of the sound sent to clear up the audio, increasing the upload time, which can cause a lag when speaking.

    • 3

Add a dedicated VoIP Ethernet connector or a router containing a phone jack to your system, so that you can use an actual phone to communicate using VoIP. Using a phone to communicate clears up many of the audio glitches that arise because of microphone and speaker problems.

Check the round-trip time of your connection by pinging the VoIP server. Latency is the time it takes a data packet containing your audio signal to reach the servers. The lower the latency, the more responsive will be your connection, as high-latency tends to result in sound dropouts and echoing. To ping using a Windows OS, enter the command prompt window by pressing the "Start" button and then selecting "Run." In the text box, type "CMD" to open a window containing a command prompt. At the prompt, type "Ping (IP address of VoIP server)" Get the IP address by contacting your VOIP provider's technical support department. If the latency is higher than 200ms, ask your VOIP technical support for an alternative server to use.

    • 5

Close any running applications that upload data when making your call. Quality VoIP sound is achieved with an upstream of at least 87.2 kbps; if it's less than that and the sound suffers, becoming choppy or cutting off during the call.

    • 6

Increase your upstream bandwidth by changing your Internet service provider or switching to a different service plan.
