Instructions

    • 1

Measure the highest point and the widest point of the teapot you want to cover (including the spout and handle). Add two inches and mark two half ovals on the solid fabric, patterned fabric and quilt batting. The highest point of the oval should be the same length as the highest point of the teapot. The bottom (straight edge) of the oval should be the same length as the widest point of the teapot.

    • 2

Cut along the marks that you made.

    • 3

Fold each piece of fabric in half lengthwise and then in half again along the middle. Press to crease the fabric so you can see the folds easily.

    • 4

Unfold each oval and align the creases in the fabric with the X marking on the rotary mat. Place a ruler on the fabric and align it with the lines on the rotary mat. Mark the fabric at each horizontal and vertical line until the entire length and width of the fabric are crisscrossed.

    • 5

Place one piece of solid fabric right side up. Place a piece of quilt batting on top of the solid fabric. Place a piece of patterned fabric right side down on top of the quilt batting. Layer the other pieces the same way.

    • 6

Baste (move the needle up and down through the fabric in one direction to make a simple stitch to only hold the fabric together temporarily) along the center line you marked, leaving long ends on each side. Turn the fabrics over and check whether the stitches at the back are smooth. If not, pull the thread out and try again. Repeat along the other lines and with the other layered piece.

    • 7

Sew all the layers together along the marked lines. Pull the loose ends of the basting thread to remove it. Pin bias tape across the bottom (straight) edge only and sew as close to the edge of the bias tape as you can. Repeat with the other piece.

    • 8

Place the two pieces one on top of the other, solid side in. Pin them together along the rounded edge.

    • 9

Fold over about quarter of an inch of the bias tape and pin it along the rounded edge, covering the bottom of the fabric and ends of the bias tape along the straight edge.

    • 10

Sew all the way along the rounded edge, as close to the edge of the bias tape as possible.

    • 11

      Add decorations if you wish.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy fabric that is already stitched to quilt batting it you want to save time. (It is available at most craft and fabric stores.)

  • Many craft and fabric stores sell fabric remnants at low prices and you could find enough material for a teapot cozy in such a basket.
