How to Hide Digital Information in Web Pages

Hiding digital information on a web site can be a used to communicate secret information to a confidant anywhere in the world. Hiding information in a picture without altering the appearance of the picture is termed steganography. Hiding data in a web page can also be done using features in HTML that are commonly available. These type of techniques are acceptable for hiding data from prying eyes but are not completely secure.

  1. Hiding Data with Steganography

      Open your web browser and navigate to download the "Steg.zip" file. The URL for "Steg.zip" is included in the Resources section of this article.

      Download the zip file to the hard drive of your computer and extract the zip files.

      Open the application "S-Tools.exe" from the directory extracted in the previous step.

      Open Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows key and "E" key simultaneously. Drag the image you wish to encode with hidden text from Windows explorer into the S-Tools application. The image will open in a window with the name of the file displayed as the title of the window.

      Drag a file containing the text you wish to hide onto the open window displaying the image.

      Type in the text box labeled "Pass phrase" the password you wish to use for hiding the data. Enter the same password in the text box labeled "Verify Pass phrase" and click on the button labeled "Ok."

      Right-click on the window that is titled "Hidden Data" and select the option "Save As."

      Enter a file name in the box labeled "File name:" to save the image with the hidden data. Click on the button "Save" to complete the file saving process.

      Edit the HTML code of your website to reference the new image with hidden data. Upload the new HTML code and image to your website.

      Open a web page with an HTML editor.

      Create a table with one row and one column.

      Set the background color of the table to black.

      Insert the text you wish to hide in the table and set the text color to black.
