How to Change Default Internet Connections

The default Internet connection is used whenever you double-click your Web browser icon and open a website. The default Internet connection is set in Windows Vista's "Network Connections" section of the Control Panel. The network connections listed in this area can include local area connections (LAN), as well as dialup and wireless connectivity. If you primarily use a LAN connection, then this should be used as the default connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and then select "Control Panel." In the Control Panel, double-click the "Network and Sharing Center." A new window opens with a list of network connections.

    • 2

Click the "Manage Network Connections" button. This lists each network connection by type, so you can easily find your default location.

    • 3

Right-click the location you want to set as the default and select "Set as Default Connection." When you set your default, the number 1 is displayed next to the icon in parenthesis.

    • 4

Open your Web browser to test your Internet connection. The Web browser will now use the default Internet connection to access the Internet. If a website is displayed, then your Internet connection settings are successful.
