How to Defend Yourself Against a Negative Job Evaluation

Job evaluations represent a very stressful experience, and a negative job evaluation can be frustrating and disappointing. How you react to your job evaluation, however, can be just as important as the result of the evaluation. In some situations, accepting constructive criticism with a positive attitude may be your best option. Sometimes, however, you may feel that a negative evaluation is unfair. If you want to defend yourself against a negative job evaluation, always be specific and respectful.

      Give yourself time to respond. If you defend yourself on-the-spot, you will probably be more emotional and less effective. Politely ask for a few days to consider the evaluation so that you can be better prepared.

      Review the description of your job to find out exactly what your role and responsibilities are. If you have any other written materials or communication about your duties, collect and review them.

      Consider the criticism you have received. Is it legitimate? Reacting angrily to criticism is a human instinct, but arguing a losing battle won't help your situation. If the criticism is not legitimate, decide whether to defend yourself against all of it or only a portion.

      Collect specific evidence that supports your argument. For example, if you were criticized for missing too much work, collect doctor's notes for the days you were absent as well as records of written communication with your supervisor about those days, if possible.
