How to Institute Classroom Management

Instituting a clear, strict classroom management plan can help teachers to run an effective and organized class. Classroom management plans provide students with guidelines for their behavior. These guidelines help the students to make wise, productive choices by rewarding them for positive behaviors and imposing consequences for negative actions. Along with producing a more organized, harmonious classroom, a behavior management plan can also increase the overall effectiveness of an education program. To ensure the effectiveness of a classroom management plan, teachers need to follow proper implementation procedures.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a classroom management plan. To effectively institute classroom management, you must write a plan. Include rules, consequences, and rewards in your plan. Tailor your plan to your students, considering their age and previous academic experiences.

    • 2

Post the rules in a conspicuous location. Create an attention-getting poster that outlines the rules and consequences of your classroom. Post the document at the front of the room so that it can be easily referenced.

    • 3

Read the rules. Orally review all of them with the students. Do not place the responsibility on the students; they will likely fail to do so without prompting.

    • 4

Require the students to repeat the rules in their own words. After you read the written rules, ask the students to paraphrase them to ensure that a language barrier does not impede compliance with the rules.

    • 5

Explain the levels of consequence. Point out what will happen each time a rule is broken. Move through the levels, explaining what will happen with each offense.

    • 6

Discuss the potential rewards that students can earn for positive behavior. Clearly explain the reward system. Tell students, in easy language, what they need to do to earn potential rewards, allowing them to easily see how they can receive recognition for their positive behaviors.

    • 7

Ask the students to create skits to act out rule-following behaviors. Allow the students to practice proper behavior by creating and performing rule-themed skits. Assign a rule to groups of students and ask them to write and perform skits in which students follow this rule. Do not ask them to create a skit in which they break the rule. You should not ask them to practice rule-breaking behaviors.

    • 8

Stick to the rules and consequences that you establish. Inconsistency will kill a behavior management plan. If you set a rule, follow it. Do not allow for exceptions; doing so will reduce your credibility as an authority figure.
