How to Set a Router to Work With the BlackBerry
Wireless network routers allow users to connect wirelessly to a high-speed Internet connection or a LAN (local area network). The BlackBerry line of smartphones are capable of accessing the Internet via a nearby wireless router. By default, the Wi-Fi capabilities of the BlackBerry are turned off to preserve battery power but can be turned on to automatically detect a nearby wireless network. This is useful for times when the BlackBerry's primary cellular data network is unavailable for Internet browsing. The router does not need to be specially set up to allow BlackBerry devices to access it.

Press the "Menu" button on the home screen. On most BlackBerry models, the "Menu" button is located between the green call button and the trackball/trackpad.

Use the trackball or trackpad to scroll to and click on "Manage Connections." Scroll down to the "Wi-Fi" option and click on the small check box next to "Wi-Fi" so that it is checked. Wait a few seconds, and a small icon will appear in the top section of the screen indicating that wireless connectivity is enabled.

Return to the main menu by pushing the "Menu" button again. Scroll to "Set up Wi-Fi Network" from the list of options and select it. On some models, "Set up Wi-Fi" or "Scan for Networks" will appear automatically after completing Step 2. If it does, skip Step 4 and proceed to Step 5.

Click on "Next" followed by "Scan for Networks." Scroll down to the network you want to connect to. If you have a secure network with your router, select the name of the network. If the network is not secure, router look for a network labeled as the name or model of the router, such as "Cisco" or "Linksys."

Enter the router's network password if prompted to do so. Secure networks, those with a small padlock icon next to them on the Blackberry screen, require a password created by the owner of the router's network.

Press the trackpad or ball while the desired network is selected. Scroll to and select "Yes" on the screen that appears asking if you want to "Save this network" if the network is your home network or a commonly used network.

Tips & Warnings
When you are not using the Internet on the Blackberry, go back into "Manage Connections" and uncheck the box next to "Wi-Fi" to turn off the wireless function. This will conserve battery life.
