How to Use Avast to Remove a Virus

Download and install Avast Antivirus if you do not already have it on your computer.

Launch your computer in Safe Mode. To do so, restart your computer and press "F8" repeatedly to launch the Advanced Options Menu. Select "Safe Mode"and press "Enter" to launch Windows Safe Mode.

Launch the program after completing the installation and click the button on the top right corner.

Select the location you want to search for the viruses in. Select "ON" under "Scan local hard drives" if you want to scan the entire computer. Select "ON" under "Removal media" if you want to search for the viruses in removal media such as external hard drives. Select "ON" under "Selected Folders" if you want to search for viruses in specific folders.

Select the scan mode you want to use. Select from Quick Scan, Normal Scan and Thorough Scan. Quick Scan is a basic scan, which may likely miss some viruses. Normal scan analyzes files based on their rather than names. It only tests dangerous parts of a file. Although it is more effective compared to Quick Scan, it also leads to some viruses not being detected. Thorough Scan involves scanning files in their entirety and checking for all files in the database. While it takes longer, it increases the chances of locating viruses.

Click the "Play" button. Avast Antivirus scans your computer for viruses and displays the results. Click all the detected viruses when the process completes and click "Delete." Alternatively, you can place the files in the Virus Chest by clicking "Move to Virus Chest." Run the scan 1 more time.

Restart your computer normally.
