How to Open a WPS Document
WPS files are text documents saved with the Microsoft Works word processor. If you used to have Microsoft Works and need to open old files, or if someone sent you files in Microsoft Works format, you may have trouble opening these files with another word processing program. There are several different ways to open these files, even if you don't have Microsoft Works on your computer, depending on what programs you do have at your disposal.
Things You'll Need
- Microsoft Word (optional)
- Other word processing program (optional)
- Internet access
Instructions
-
Microsoft Word
-
1
Download and install the Works 6-9 Converter if your computer has Microsoft Word installed. See Resources for the download link. (If you have previously installed Microsoft Works on this computer, Works 6-9 Converter is already installed and you can skip to Step 2.)
-
2
Open the WPS file with Microsoft Word.
-
-
3
Save the WPS file in DOC (Microsoft Word), DOCX (Microsoft Word 2007) or RTF (Rich Text) format by going to "File->Save As" and changing the file type under the "Save as type" menu. This will save a copy of the WPS file so that you can open it on other computers without the Works 6-9 Converter.
Word Viewer
-
4
Download and install Word Viewer, a free program for viewing Microsoft Word and Microsoft Works files (see Resources).
-
5
Open the WPS file with Word Viewer.
-
6
Copy and paste the contents of the WPS file into a word processing program, such as Microsoft Word or Open Office, so that you can edit and save the file.
Converting to Different Formats
-
7
Visit Zamzar, a free online file converter that can convert Microsoft Works files (see Resources).
-
8
Browse for and select the WPS file, then choose the format you wish to convert to. Supported text formats are Microsoft Word (DOC), OpenOffice (ODT) and plain text (TXT); if you choose TXT, you will lose your original formatting.
-
9
Enter your email address and click "Convert." Zamzar will email you a link to your file when it is finished converting; download it and open it in the word processing program of your choice.
