Instructions

    • 1

Choose the type of fountain you would like to build. Pick from several styles that may include a water wheel patio fountain, a terra cotta fountain, freestanding fountain, a pond-based fountain or a sunken fountain. Of all these, the sunken fountain probably requires the most work.

    • 2

Dig a hole for any type of sunken fountains. Excavate a hole large enough for a large pot to fit into and drill a hole in the bottom of the pot. For freestanding fountains, drill a hole in the bottom of the pot for drainage and place the pot in your garden area.

    • 3

Place a submersible pump in the bottom of the pot and run the extension cord through the bottom hole. Close the drainage hole with a sealant, applying it to both sides of the hole.

    • 4

Place the pump on top of bricks in the bottom of the pot to elevate it. For the sunken fountain, place the pot in the hole you dug in the ground, pull out the cord for the pump so it's accessible and fill in the sides with dirt so there are no visible gaps between the soil and the pot.

    • 5

Plug in the cord from the pump to an extension cord and run it to the nearest outdoor electrical circuit. Don't plug it in yet. Bury your cord or run it along the border of your garden to disguise it thoroughly.

    • 6

Surround your patio fountain with plants and foliage to hide the cord even further and give your patio fountain a rustic, outdoor look.

    • 7

Plug in the extension cord to the outdoor electrical outlet.
