How to Install a 32 Bit Application on Windows XP 64 Bit

The advantage of 64-bit operating systems is that they allow a user to utilize more physical RAM in the system, but they are potentially disadvantageous in that certain programs designed for 32-bit operating systems will not properly function in a 64-bit environment. This problem can be circumvented by using the Windows compatibility mode, which will allow the programs to function as though they are operating in a 32-bit environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the disk of the program to be installed into your computer.

    • 2

Select "Install" to place the 32-bit application on your hard drive.

    • 3

Restart the computer to complete the installation.

    • 4

Open the "Start" menu, click "All Programs" and highlight the executable file for your 32-bit program. This is the file that you would click to cause the program to run.

    • 5

Right-click on the executable file and select the "Properties" option.

    • 6

Click on the "Compatibility" tab, check the box that states "Run this program in compatibility mode" and select the option to run it as a "32-bit application."
