How to Determine Length of Cotter Pin
A cotter pin is a type of pin used to fasten pieces of metal together. The length of a cotter pin is measured in fractional inches, starting at 1/32 of an inch. Being able to measure a cotter pin's length is useful because it will allow you to determine which pin is the appropriate size for your project. Locate the "eye" of the cotter pin. The cotter pin's eye is the ring-like shape found at the end of the pin. Two pin legs should be extending outward from this eye.

Identify which of the two pin legs is the shortest.

Measure the distance between the bottom of the cotter pin's eye and the end of the pin's shortest leg. The measurements should be taken in inches.
