How to Die Cut Metal

It is possible to use a die cutting machine on metal, as long as you choose the right kind of metal. You can use foil and thin sheets of metal in most die cutting machines. These machines usually come with instructions, including a list of materials through which the machine can and cannot cut. Using a shim to raise your metal can also significantly help your die cutting machine slice through the metal.

Things You'll Need

• Die cutting machine
• Metal sheet
• Piece of copier paper
• Die

Instructions

1. Fold a piece of copier paper in half.

2. Place the copier paper under the die cutting machine's cutting mat. You will use the paper as a shim to raise the cutting mat, making it easier to cut through the metal.

3. Place your thin sheet of metal on top of the cutting platform.

4. Put your die (the design you want to cut) on top of the metal sheet.

5. Press down the handle on your die cutting machine. You may need to press it down a few times for thicker metal.
