How to Make an Anti-Virus Boot CD

If a virus has completely taken over your system and you are unable to fully access your computer, the best way to attempt to rid the computer of the virus is by using a boot CD. Running an anti-virus from a boot CD allows the computer to launch into the contents of the CD instead of trying to load the operating system. The anti-virus application can then fully scan your computer and attempt any repairs to regain control of your system.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a bootable anti-virus image. Avast Antivirus offers bootable AV images. UltimateBootCD.com also has an extensive offering of free diagnostic boot images. These images will be in the ISO format.

    • 2

Download and install a CD/DVD burning application if you do not already have one. Programs such as Nero and MagicISO allow the user to burn an image to CD.

    • 3

Insert a blank CD and launch the burning application.

    • 4

Select the option to "Burn Image." View the application's specific help files for the location of this option. Often, it is within the "File" menu.

    • 5

Navigate to the downloaded ISO file and select "OK."

    • 6

Select the option to "Burn/Write" the image and select your CD burner from the list. Leave the options, if any, at their defaults. Start the burning process by selecting "Burn/Write/Start." Once the image is burned to the CD, boot your computer with the anti-virus CD.

Tips & Warnings

  • To boot your computer from the CD, insert the disc into the computer and restart. Press any key when prompted to boot from the CD or DVD.
