How to Retrieve Your Old Music From a Classic iPod

Getting your music off of your iPod comes in handy in certain situations. If your computer crashed and you lost all of your data, this is a great way to at least get your music back. You might need to just make a backup of your music in case your computer does crash someday. Of course, if you are transferring your data to a new media player you will need to get that music off of your iPod first before you place it onto that new player.

      Download and install "Ephpod" from the resource link in this guide. Ephpod allows you to extract your iPod's files directly to your computer, making seamless backups of your favorite artists.

      Connect your iPod to your computer with its USB cable and wait as your computer recognizes the iPod. If this is the first time you are connecting your iPod to the computer, wait as the proper drivers are installed.

      Open Ephpod on your computer. By default a desktop icon is placed onto your desktop to make it easier to start the program. Double-click the Ephpod icon and it will start. Select your iPod from the list of available drives when the first Ephpod window pops up.

      Select all of the music that you would like to copy to your computer. If you are copying all of the items. Click the first item in the list, hold the "Shift" key down and click the last item in the list. Right-click any of the selected items and click "Copy to directory." A new window will appear allowing you to select where you want to save the files. Browse to where you want the files saved and click "Save."

      Wait as your files are copied to your computer. This may take some time depending on the amount of data being transferred. Once the process is complete, you will have a fully working backup of your iPod's contents.

      Download and install "Copytrans" from the resource section. Open Copytrans once you have successfully installed it onto your computer.

      Connect your iPod to your computer using its supplied USB cable. Select your iPod from the list of available drives in the "Select iPod" dropdown menu. Click on "Manual Backup" on the Copytrans home menu. You will see the list of available files on your iPod.

      Click the files that you want to transfer to your computer and click "Backup to Folder" at the top of the CopyTrans home menu. A window will appear where you can browse to a place on your computer or external storage device to save the transferred files to. Click "Save" when you have selected the save location.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also copy your videos using Ephpod and Copytrans.

  • Do not share your iPod's contents with anyone as that is piracy.
