Instructions

  1. Getting a Job as a CNO

    • 1

After obtaining a bachelor's degree in nursing, pursue a master's degree as a clinical nurse practitioner in a specialty area. A master's degree in nursing is required in all CNO positions.

    • 2

Obtain a nursing license and practical experience. Nursing licenses are administered in each state and require at least an associate's degree in nursing and passing of a state exam. Nursing licenses are renewed annually, and are the first step in finding a career in the field.

After obtaining a license, find employment in nursing to gain practical experience. Employers require such experience as well as experience as a clinical nurse practitioner so one understands the entirety of work required of a CNO.

    • 3

Take on additional responsibilities and apply for higher-level positions. Even if you don't receive a promotion, be willing to take on administrative responsibilities as a nurse. The better understanding you have of the business aspects of nursing, the better your chances of receiving a promotion and gaining valuable experience for CNO opportunities.

Most hospitals and medical organizations are willing to promote from within for management opportunities. Apply for internal promotions such as nurse supervisor and nurse manager. Gain several years of experience in such positions.

    • 4

Apply for CNO opportunities. These can be found on Internet job boards, through nursing and medical associations and nurse recruiters. When preparing your resume, highlight practical experience in nursing as well as administrative experience such as overseeing nursing staff, handling budgets and other business functions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear a business suit for CNO interviews. Although most nurses, including nurse managers and supervisors, wear scrubs for work, CNO occupations often require business attire.
