How to Add a Scanner in Vista

Add a scanner to Windows Vista in one of two ways: locally or from a network. Adding a scanner locally is the most common; it means that the scanner will only operate on one computer. Adding a scanner from a network means that multiple computers will have access to the scanner at the same time.

Instructions

  1. Adding a Scanner Locally

    • 1

Connect the scanner to your computer by plugging the scanner's USB cord into the USB port on your computer. Desktop computers traditionally have their USB ports located on the back of the monitor or on the tower. Laptops generally have their USB ports located on the side of the computer.

    • 2

Allow Windows Vista to install the necessary drivers for the scanner. An administrator approval box will pop up, asking if you wish to proceed. Click "Allow" to continue with the installation process.

    • 3

Follow all command prompts once installation begins. This varies from scanner to scanner, based on the manufacturer. Some scanners will have the computer do all of the work automatically, others will walk you through a process of clicking various prompts. Some scanners require you to insert the provided installation disc, and others may even have you unplug the scanner and plug it back in.

    • 4

Restart your computer, if prompted to do so by the installation window on your screen. If not, click "Exit" once you have finished installing the scanner to your computer.

Adding a Scanner From a Network

    • 5

Locate the scanner's model and manufacturer name. You'll need this information to connect to the correct scanner network.

    • 6

Open your computer to the desktop, and navigate to the "Start" menu at the bottom left of your screen. Click to open the menu, and find "Network" in the right sidebar. Select it.

    • 7

Find your scanner's model and manufacturer in the list of options. The number of scanners on the list will be the amount of possible networks your computer has detected. If your computer is not recognizing the correct scanner's network, consult the scanner's manufacturer manual to see how to fix this problem, as it is manufacturer specific.

    • 8

Right-click on the correct scanner when you find it on the list. Find the option labeled "Install," and click it. An installation window will appear. Follow the series of command prompts to complete the process, and then exit all windows.

Tips & Warnings
